'Meet Mary Wacuka Mburu and go behind the scenes to discover the production of Mimco’s Bohomania collection. Mary’s story is a testament to the power of Mimco’s collaboration with the Ethical Fashion Initiative and the mutual responsibility we have to continue empowering and celebrating women. Mary says: “My name is Mary Wacuka Mburu and I work for Ethical Fashion Artisans as a line supervisor. I have been working here for six years. I performed various tasks while working on the MIMCO order. I helped the artisans with the beadwork and performed Quality Control on screen printing. I also made sure that all the completed Mimco bags and pouches were of good quality. Working on the MIMCO bags and pouches was difficult at first but in the end it was really satisfying because it made me proud to see what I had made with my own hands. This work from MIMCO has provided my family with a steady income so that I can pay the rent give my children an education and it has also helped me personally to develop myself in many ways. My work gives my children hope. They know they will get an education, they will eat well and that hopefully we will make enough money to build our own house. I also believe that there is hope for their future to build a better life for themselves. Being able to pay for my children’s tuition fees, feed my family, pay rent and just simply having a job and not having to worry about finding work it makes me so happy.” Mimco and the Ethical Fashion Initiative continue their journey celebrating the creativity and beauty of artisanal manufacturing. With their second collection called Bohomania, Mimco continues to provide fairly paid jobs to marginalised Kenyan communities. To produce this order, Mimco worked with 230 artisans, 86% of which were women. The collection was designed to require a variety of different skillsets which meant a total of 11 different communities were impacted by the order.
