'On our recent trip to Port Louis, Mauritius we spent some time at the central market. One of the best ways to experience a country and culture is through the food / street food. Mauritius has some amazing food, influenced by it’s Indian, Chinese and African cultures. The central market is one of the best places to experience the best Mauritian food. The market has a massive selection of fruit and vegetables. Mauritius is a tropical island, so no surprise we ate litchi, pineapple and coconut. Some of the street food things that I really enjoy eating is Dhal Puri. Dhal Puri is a thin, flat bread that is filled with a savoury filling, rolled out flat, and then cooked on a hot stone. At 12 Rupees or 25 Euro Cents, this is a cheap, delicious snack. At the same stalls you can find chilli bites or Gateau Piment which are delicious chilli flavoured balls. For desert I like Napolitaine or Gateau Napolitaine which are little pink frosted buttery biscuit treats. Of course we also at at a number of restaurants where the best Mauritian food can be found, including Chicken and prawn curry, smoked marlin, wild boar stew and rougaille saucisse or sausage stew.
