The Aquarium Has Been Going For 3 Years. Natural Pond Style Fish Tank. Bladder Snail Information (Physella acuta) Bladder snails mainly live in stagnant or slowly moving waters. They can tolerate very poor water paramters including eutrophic conditions. They are pan-arctic in distribution, appearing in waters world wide. Physella acuta are small air breathing freshwater snails. They are aquatic gastropods, mollusks in the family Physidae. Common names include European physa, tadpole snail, bladder snail, acute bladder snail, pond snail and \"pest snail\" How Do Bladder Snails Reproduce? Physa Snails reproduce by breeding and laying eggs in clear gelatinous masses. These eggs may appear underwater or just above the surface. Eggs are fixed to and laid on live plants, hardscape, aquarium walls or elsewhere. With proper equipment, tiny bladder snails can be seen developing in the eggs. Can Bladder Snails Live in Ponds? Yes! Bladder Snails can thrive in almost any pond type environment. They are air breathing snails and that allows them to survive within oxygen depleted lakes and ponds. They may also be found in slow moving streams and other bodies of calm water. Can Bladder Snails Live in Cold Water? Yes! Warm water will encourage them to be more active and to breed more often but they can survive in cold conditions. They are all over the globe at this point and they are thriving in all sorts of climates. My own snails have survived being under ice, in a frozen Bucket Pond, when outdoors in the winter. Can Bladder Snails Live Outside? Yes they can thrive outdoors. You are likely find some bladder snails in nearby ponds and streams. When placed in man made ponds they do quite well even without a heating element in the water. Can Bladder Snails Reproduce Asexually? Yes! Bladder Snails are capable of self fertilization. They prefer to mate with other snails but they can produce their own offspring singlehandedly. They will also delay self fertilization for as long as possible, to avoid inbreeding. There are ways to trick them into faster asexual reproduction like exposing the snail to a predator. Can Bladder Snails Live in Brackish Water? This I do not know. Judging from their sheer hardy nature I would say yes, they probably can survive in brackish waters. My own snails in comparison live in pretty hard water with a lot of dissolved nutrients. I would advise testing with only a few snails at first. Can Bladder Snails Live in Tap Water? Yes but it depends on the tap water. Us country folk tend to use underground wells and that water is just amazing in most cases. City tap water can do fine but you must allow the chemicals to evaporate out. Leave the container open for 24 hours. Your tap water will work after that but not as a long term solution. That water will still contain trace elements and chemicals like mutagen X. How Fast do Bladder Snails Reproduce? This can vary but they are fast breeders. When given the right incentives they will double and triple in their numbers within a very short time. A handful of snails can populate a small tank within a few months. How to Control Bladder Snails: Reduce the food. They breed based on how much food they have access to. By reducing your feeding schedule you will see a slow down their apocalyptic breeding ability. Will Bladder Snails Eat Live Plants? No they will not eat your live plants. They will eat wilted and dieing plants but live plants are safe. Unless they are starving. Starving Bladder Snails will eat anything organic. Even Detritus Worms and possibly hydra, are on the menu when these Snails are hungry. What do Bladder Snails Eat? Algae and Bacteria are their primary foods. They eat by scraping and grazing on hard surfaces. Pulling up and consuming algae and bacteria layers. They will happily take ANY other foods as well, like left over Fish Flakes, Algae Wafers and Fresh veggies. Some hobbyists even feed their snails with meat and fish flesh. I like to feed them clean cucumber slices. Which all of my other pets eat as well. Are Bladder Snails Poisonous? No they are not poisonous. They can safely be handled but you should of course wash your hands after touching anything in the aquarium. Bladder Snails are also very tiny and pretty fragile. When moving them or touching them, be careful not to crush their shells. #aquarium #fishtank #snails #bladdersnails #bucketponds #diy #pond #nature #petsnail #snailsaspets #plantedtank #aquariums #tadpolesnails'
