It’s a great place to visit if you want to sample some of Yogyakarta’s traditional foods and some Javanese dishes. We start outside the market and eat pecel a cooked vegetable salad drizzled with peanut sauce before heading inside and upstairs to find Empal Bu Warno which serves up smoky fried beef and intestine on rice, together with basil, cucumber and a thick, sweet sauce reminiscent of molasses. To cool down, we perch on a stool in front of Mbah Hari’s small stand and let her dish up a bowl of es dawet a refreshing mix of coconut milk, palm sugar and rice flour and tapioca flour jellies. To finish- the ultimate sate- sate kere or beef fat sate. Chunks of pure fat that sizzle over charcoal and then ooze as you chomp down on them. You might not feel like eating for many hours afterwards because they’re so rich but they’re worth it. Trust us. Visit in the morning to early afternoon. Nasi Pecel at Mbak Sri Cilik outside the market.
